Critical Reflection - SIE Presentation Showcase 2017

On the 30th of December, it was our SIE 2017 SIE presentation showcase 2017 and I was the emcee for the first half of the presentation. The presentation show management team had put in a lot of effort and sacrifice to ensure the event is perfect. Despite our efforts to ensure everything is perfect, there were many obstacles that we had not identified and we were forced to deal with it on the spot while ensuring everything is smooth sailing. When I was giving a speech to the audiences and the judging panels, it was very uncomfortable as I had to be very formal which caught me off guard. No amount of prior experiences had ever prepared me for this a formal speech to the audiences as I am very used to give an informal speeches. Nonetheless, I was able to carry on with the presentation and gave it my best. Ultimately the most important areas that I had identified and wish to improve on in the future is to be able to give formal speeches. I would start learning on how to present formall

According to the article "Use of Cladding in Buildings Here Have Grown in Recent Times," by Faris Mokhtar (2017), cladding is the application of overlapping an underlying structure with another material to improve buildings sustainability, but it could increase the fire hazards risk of buildings. The article mentioned that an investigation was done on Grenfell Tower incident and discovered that flammable materials used for cladding might have contributed in intensifying the flame. Engineering experts mentioned that the popularity of cladding had increased recently for several reasons such as enhancing the aesthetic appearance of buildings, eliminating noises, safeguarding from rain and insulating the buildings. Faris mentioned that application of cladding may vary with climates. In colder climates, cladding is filled with thermal insulation while in hotter climates such as Singapore, cladding serves as an extra facade layer to provide shading. Technical Report - [Edited]

Executive Summary This report responds to a call for proposals by identifying the importance of University Students being aware of energy conservation. It then describes a means of raising the awareness of SIT students on energy conservation. Ideally, students should possess basic knowledge of energy conservation and practice energy saving techniques which will in term benefit both the campus and public in reducing energy usage. However, students lack the knowledge and awareness on energy conservation as they prioritize convenience and comfort at the expense of energy conservation. This report aims to propose to the SIT Estate Division to implement an Eco Tree (self-sustained by solar panels) with an Eco Gallery (containing information on energy conservation) constructed below the Eco Tree to raise the awareness of students on energy conservation. Benefits of implementing the proposed solution are discussed, along with potential issues and other considerations faced in the impleme

Critical Reflection on Effective Communication

English has always been my weakest module and I always had difficulties in relay my message without sounding offensive. The reason was due to my family influence as I was brought up in a family whereby English is very alien in my family as we depend mainly on Hokkien and Singlish to communicate with each other. At the beginning of Effective Communication module, I was told to write an introduction about myself to elaborate on my strength and weakness in terms of communication, and the aspects that I want to achieve throughout this module. The areas that I wanted to improve on were my reading and writing as it is my greatest weakness and as a future engineer, I need the skills to communicate very specific information to others effectively. The first task given to me was to write a reader’s response to the topic of Cladding. Initially, I had a lot of trouble understanding how to craft good sentences while not being able to notice my grammar mistakes that I had always been making thro

Critical Reflection on Oral Presentation

At the start of this module, I mentioned in my personal introduction that I had many years of experience when comes to both presentating and speaking to a large group of audiences. Despite the experiences I had, there are always more to learning as presentation is a form of art in knowing how to influence the audiences and direct their thinking to a single common point. My team, Task-Force, was tasked to give a formal presentation on our proposed solution on “raising awareness of energy-conversation through the installation of Eco-Tree in the new campus of SIT@Punggol”. After the presentation, I received several criticisms on my presentation skills with regards to the vibe I had send out to the audiences and the transitioning to the next presenters.    During the presentation, I was so focused on projecting my voice and tonality in which I had tensed myself up when I was presenting my ideas and points across to the audiences. I was unaware that the vibe I was radiating came off a

Technical Report - Draft 1

Introduction Singapore is a metropolis city-state without any natural resources and heavily dependent on external trade alliances agreements to bring in natural resources to power up the city. Natural resources have always been the source of conflict between countries due to its scarcity. To overcome this situation, Singapore has been constantly investing in sustainable methods to reduce the usage of the natural resource while maintaining the needs to power up the city. As Singapore continues to prosper, our education system moves towards applied learning that encourages the student to utilize technology to expedite on their full learning capability. In result, students have grown to be more dependent on technologies as it has brought comfort and convenience towards daily learning. Technology has also influenced our students to be ignorant to Singapore’s reliance on energy from other countries and the lack of education on energy-conservation that will lead to over-consumpti
